Supporting Teachers to Encourage Women in Physics
December 5, 2018 @ 9:00 am - 2:00 pm
$161Physics is known as THE fundamental science, providing understanding that is applicable to all other sciences. Despite its important role in the field of science, the percentage of women earning post-secondary degrees in Physics continues to decline (more than the other sciences).
The American Physical Society’s STEP UP 4 Women Project is actively resisting this trend and is seeking to reduce barriers and motivate women to pursue physics. The Society’s website states: “If half of the high school physics teachers encourage just one more female student to pursue physics as a major, a historic shift will be initiated – female students will make up 50% of incoming physics majors.”
This professional development day will provide teachers with APS STEP 4 Women evidence-based resources that will make it easier to encourage women in their classes to pursue Physics.
As described by the Rowan STEM school: “The program will also discuss tools for developing 3-D Assessments – Crosscutting Concepts as it relates to identifying productive ideas that are often hidden in students’ incorrect answers to multiple-choice questions.”
Earn 5 Professional Development Hours and Lunch is included in the cost of this event. More details and separate registration link available HERE.
