6 Budget Friendly Spring Break Day Trips for NJ Teachers
Spring break is right around the corner, so we’ve done our homework to find some fun and easy on the wallet options for resting and relaxing with your family. And what better way to do that than looking for awesome (free or cheap) outings you can take with your kids. New Jersey is packed with culture, history, and so much outdoor beauty that there is really no need to leave the state, right?
If Florida beaches or other far off destinations are not in the equation this April, or if you’ve had to abruptly cancel travel plans, here are a few close-to-home ideas that will make the teacher and parent in you very happy! Here’s to a great staycation!
Monmouth County Historical Association
The months of March and April are all about Bruce Springsteen at the Monmouth County Historical Association. Come out and tour the museum Wednesdays, 11-5, Thursdays 11-8, Fridays 11-5, Saturdays 11-5, and Sundays 11-5.

March 19th 6:00 pm – 8:00 pm – Springsteen’s American Vision
- Hear a lecture on The Boss and his musical and cultural impact over the last 5 decades.

March 28th 12:00 pm – 4:00 pm – Open Hearth Cooking
- Tour the Covenhoven house and learn how the colonists cooked over an open hearth. Participants will also be able to taste 18th century recipes.

April 2nd 6:00 pm – 8:00 pm – Springsteen: His Hometown Curator’s Tour.
- Learn all about The Boss from childhood through his musical career, his family, and ancestors. It’s a tour you do not want to miss.

April 16th – 6:00 pm – 8:00 pm – Bruce Springsteen: Industrial Flight and the Fate of Freehold

Princeton University Art Museum
The Princeton University Art Museum has many wonderful things to offer in March and April. In fact, there are fun, free events for the whole family. Be sure to add this to your list of spring break family fun this year.

March 21st, 10:30 am – 1:00 pm – Art for Families
- Bring your child and swing by the museum on Saturday morning for a hands-on art project you can do together. This Saturday’s feature is Ancient Chinese Tomb Guardians.

- View the museums premier art collections and enjoy a free tour

- Learn to Look is an event that teaches kids how to observe and appreciate artwork. Follow that up by creating your own piece of amazing art together.

- Art on Screen – Salt of the Earth, The Killing Fields, and Cameraperson
- Theater member admission price
Visit the zoo and aquarium as a fun day trip with your family over spring break.

- Behind the scenes tour of the giraffes. View where they live and meet their zoo keepers.

Rockingham State Historic Site
April 18th, 1:30 pm – Weston Mill and Dam – A History
- Watch a presentation of the history of the mill and the infamous John Simcoe raid.
Barnegat Lighthouse State Park
This beautiful 32 acre state park was created in 1957. Tour one of NJ’s 18 lighthouses.
- April 1 – October 31 it is open from 9:00 am – 3:30 pm, Wednesday – Sunday.
This is a wonderful zoo with fun and unusual animals. Be sure to pack a picnic lunch and plan to make a full day of your visit. There are no concessions inside the zoo, so bringing a lunch or snack is a must.
