To prevent teen substance abuse, adults should set a good example and communicate openly with adolescents. Dr. Sandy Gibson, Ph.D., LCSW, and Associate Professor in the Department of Counselor Education at The College of New Jersey, has researched addiction, prevention methods, and intervention strategies in order to change the way we speak to teens about drugs. Telling them “Just Say No” is not an effective approach. Rather, parents and educators should be knowledgeable and open-minded. After learning about the reasons teens decide to use drugs, an emphasis will be placed on delaying the use of drugs until later in life and reducing the harmful effects of drugs.
