SUMMARY:The NJEA Convention 2020 Will Look A Little Different This Year
DESCRIPTION:The NJEA Convention 2020 will be held November 5-6th\, but not in Atlantic City.  Instead\, the event will take place REMOTELY. \nEvery year\, thousands of educators in New Jersey look forward to the NJEA convention in Atlantic City. In addition to hundreds of opportunities for top-notch professional development\, educators look forward to networking with others in their field.  This year\, for the 2020 NJEA\, the in-person gathering is (due to circumstances surrounding the Pandemic) canceled\, but the event will be held digitally.  The novelty of a digital learning experience may have worn off by now\, but the ability to access the resources the convention has to offer in a time of social-distancing still holds great value for NJEA participants.  Details about exactly what the digital event will look like will not be revealed until September\, but we do know an exciting keynote speaker\, Ruby Bridges\, has been secured. \nFor now\, NJEA members can be sure that the Association is working hard to make this the best digital event possible. \n  \n

SUMMARY:Teaching About Contested Issues: The Choices Approach
DESCRIPTION:It’s not uncommon for students to feel they don’t need to learn about history. We’ve all seen the “what’s done is done\, it’s in the past” mindset. Luckily\, The Choices Program from Brown University created an innovative curriculum and videos that make contested international issues accessible and relevant. This interactive professional development experience will introduce The Choices Program’s resources and take a deep dive into The Civil War and the Meaning of Liberty and Responding to Terrorism: Challenges for Democracy units. The workshop fee includes print and a one-year license for the digital editions of these units. Materials are appropriate for grades 7-12.
